Service Design | Ecosystem Mapping Compliance Within HHS

Description

This is an example of ecosystem maps created with our government clients at Steampunk.

Ecosystem maps provide multiple benefits for clients. They allow us to connect people to processes, systems, laws, policies, and agencies. We can paint a more accurate picture of the current state. In this case, compliance within the agency.

Using Mural, I created a legend that broadly defined categories.

I searched publicly-available information to map out as much as we could, then presented to our clients to validate. In some cases, they were very familiar with the complexities of their agencies. In others, this was their first time seeing the complexity. In both cases, this level of preparation lead to greater trust with our clients. It lead to important meetings with key stakeholders, and in some cases proprietary information to help us further flesh out the future state.

The great benefit to using Mural is the ability to design ecosystem maps down to detailed information, because you can zoom in and out of the layout. Hyperlinks also add credibility to the resources. Think of ecosystem mapping a bit like reorganizing everything on one flat plane.

This is a current draft. Keep checking back for updates.
