“One of the reasons that I think Barry (Jenkins, director of Moonlight) hired me was because I kind of understood what he wanted to do with Miami. We’re not getting The Birdcage Miami. That exists. But we wanted to take that Miami and just put a layer over it. We wanted to use the pastels, the Cuban colors, the architecture, the colors of the Caribbean, which you also find in New Orleans, all those coastal areas along the Gulf. … Go in there and just try to give Miami. … taking the color from the neon … and taking some of those shapes from the (art) deco…”
